Should I invest in a 5 piece Pearl drum set, or buy snare, toms, bass, etc separately?
It will be my first set, but I plan to expand it right away with more equipment. So it seems that I should start from scratch and build my custom set. Then again i'm a beginner so please advise!
Yeah, I don't have a huge budget at all. i just want to be able to customize it and im wondering if the starter pearl sets allow you to do that?

get a used pearl
Buy a complete drumset unless you have a few thousand to drop on separates. Assembling a ragtag collection of drums will only lead to a drumset with no timbral cohesion. Try one of the Pearl Vision VSX sets, they’re relatively cheap, well made and sound great for the price, plus they have a lifetime warranty on the shells.
i agree with earl. this is mainly going to depend on your budget. first of all, the beginner series for most drum makers only come mass produced, meaning there is no room for you to customize. if you wanna customize, be prepared to drop over $2grand for the shells alone, and that would be on the CHEAP side. buying a 5 piece set altogether will be much much cheaper. if youre looking to add drums sometime in the future, go with a color that isnt crazy. for example, extra drums in piano black would likely be easier to find than extra drums in sierra sunrise burst, or something. are you planning to expand with more drums? or just more hardware?
also, id like to add that 5 pieces is plenty for a beginner. you will get bogged down if you have more things, and it will only make playing more confusing. 5 is a perfect size for a beginner. some people even decide to play with less!
so my advice: get the 5 piece set, and if you wanna add on, look at getting some nicer cymbals. cymbals are the one thing i personally wouldnt want to skimp on. if you invest in some nice cymbals, they will last you forever. plus, cymbal upgrade is far cheaper than drum upgrade.
hope this helps some. email for more info. good luck!
