I bought these as a Christmas gift for my brother, who's in his 40s. He's been a wannabe drummer for a while and has had a few acoustic drums sets, at least one of very high quality--but he's never had an electronic drum set. (He's jammed with bands, but not played professionally.) He had to sell his last and best drum set and hasn't had a set for a long time. Plus he lives in an apartment. So I saw these at Target for 0 and decided to take a chance, thinking I could always return them if they sucked or were broken.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to see him during Christmas and wasn't able to give him the set until 1 week ago, long after I'd lost the receipt, so I was really worried that he wouldn't like them.

Well, I got a call today, after he'd been playing them "hard" for a week and he raved about them. Things he mentioned:

- 100 sounds (each of which is tunable, which I didn't see mentioned in the specs, but was hoping for).

- He says he really beats the s**t out of his drums and he's really impressed that the set so far has no dings, and neither do the sticks or rims of the drums. This, he thinks, is because there is a tube of air around the edges that prevents them from getting damaged.

- Came with headphones (though I'm not sure of the quality). He said I could have mine back.

- Came with drum sticks (as mentioned, no dents so far)

- He likes the way the module lights up, so it can help you learn how to play

- Likes that you can remove the drum part from the songs that come with it, so you can "be" the drummer

- Likes that you can plug in an MP3 player

- Likes that you can record your own playing. It sounded like you could only lay down one track at a time, but he's not that familiar with sequencers so I'm not sure if that's correct or not.

- Said when he got it out of the box he thought the stand would be flimsy, but he's very impressed with it because it's held up really well.

- He said the pedals were made in a sturdy way too with some kind of special bushing or something.

Basically, he said it was the best gift he ever got ("the best gift a man could give another man" were his exact words), so all I can say is that if you're on the fence, get the thing! I should get one for myself.

Oh, I just remembered one more thing he said. He said, "If I'd known electronic drums were this good, I would have bought a set a long time ago."

Great value for the money. It was a gift for my nephew who has just started taking lessons but as a former professional I was surprised how good the action was for such a reasonable set. The sound quality was also a lot better than I expected considering the price. Great set for a beginner.

I've had this kit a few days now. It has its pros and cons:

CONS: 1.)Multi-triggering of the bass and hi-hat pedals. I'll often get multiple kicks or hi-hat 'clicks' even when only pressing the pedal once. This generally happens when I'm working a pattern with hands and feet at the same time. The midi seems to get confused causing the pedal triggers to trip multiple times. This can be very confusing when working on a complicated rhythm, trying to perfect time, or struggling through a difficult independence exercise. 2.) The hi-hat and ride cymbal triggers aren't very loud, particularly when compared to the other drums. Can be hard to hear them, even at full volume. 3.)Set up of the kit and use of the midi is a bit confusing due to the sometimes vague instructions. 4.) Can't play a CD (as far as I can figure out) through the midi for play-along. I wear a small set of headphones under the headphones that came with the set so I can hear outside sources while I play. 5.)Definately not performance quality. But...PROS: 1.) Costs just a bit more than a plain practice pad set with no sounds. Having the sounds is much better. 2.)It's nearly silent to outside listeners. 3.)For working independence, timekeeping and patterns its not too bad. 4.)Doesn't take much space. 5.)It's pretty fun to play.

OVERALL: Though it has its problems, it's really the only choice if you're like me and want to practice timekeeping, independence and patterns while not disturbing roomates and without spending more than 0 (though you have to figure about another 0 if you buy a seat, music stand, and a couple of books.)

An excellent idea, with a fatally flawed implementation. It appears to be a limitation of the midi controller - drums will fail to sound intermittantly.

Since this appears to be a design issue, an except from my request for support from Ion-Audio.com:

I have found a problem with my new Ion IED05 Electronic Drum Set - the drums appear to conflict, perhaps in the MIDI interface (update: definitely the controller), perhaps within the Alesis controller.

When playing the drums, a pad will fail to sound intermittantly (and occasionally, the whole system will mute momentarily).

I hope this isn't the first you've heard of this issue, and that a fix is available.

Of course, I've checked the connections, checked to be sure I'm hitting the pads squarely and in the center, tried swapping pads (though the issue affects all of them, not just the snare), etc.

If fact, I can often reproduce the problem by simply, repeatedly striking any two pads together, one a split-second after the other. When it happens, the second appears to mute the first, before the first fully produces a tone.

Until/unless this issue's resolved, you'll find the set a cause of repeated frustration, whether for learning, practice or performance.

4/15/05 Update: after sending the kit back (twice), received a brand new replacement - which has the same flaw. Ion Support did all they could - this is a serious design problem.

Final verdict - the Alesys drum machine seems to operate fine (triggering from a keyboard via MIDI, no drop-outs), but the trigger-to-MIDI device (an ION branded black box labelled iET01) must be the problem. Perhaps an OK kit for learning, but fatally flawed in a way that lead to no end of frustration, and renders the kit unsuitable for performance.

This is really strange, because I bought this unit on sale from another vendor (9) and like other reviewers state it turns off at higher volumes but I kept it anyways and here's why.

As a beginner drum student, I wasn't ready to invest in a drum set so I went with this tabletop model at a rock bottom price, comparing it to 5 other brands. My hope was that if I could get the knack of playing it after a few months, then I would consider upgrading to a full kit and hopefully sell it at an online auction for a fair price.

The first time I played along with one of the learning songs, I turned up the volume and the entire unit shut off! After some investigating, it turns out that if I turn the bass OFF, I can use it beyond a 4 volume, maybe up to a 6 on a good day. But with that bass on, the entire unit will always shut down whenever it reaches a 3 or 4 depending on how hard I am hitting the pads.

In the end, because of storage considerations and the fact that it does have a student mode, metronome and other features I have elected to keep it, deal with its defect and play it at low volume. I also took into account that just one snare practice pad runs around or so, and a metronome another .

With all those reasons combined, I figured that it's still a good value for practice reasons, because returning it and finding another model for the same price or even a little more was not an option at the time of purchase.

In reading these reviews it seems that its a common defect, so buyer beware. I would still take my chance again and see if you end up with one that doesn't have this problem because it is a fabulous value.

Received this as a Christmas gift last year. It seemed pretty solid but then I tried to play it. First thing I noticed was that one of the drum pads wasn't attached properly, kind of flopping around. I took the palm of my hand and pressed it into place. Plugged it in and started to play. THE SOUND WAS GREAT! Much better sounding than Casio or even Yahama kits I've tried.

Then I realized I didn't have the pedals plugged in. Plugged them up, tapped the kick bass pedal twice and the whole thing shut itself off. I turned it back on, started to play, tapped the pedal........every time the same, turns itself off. Customer support for this product from Fender is pretty much non-existent.

This is a real shame. Fender lent their good name to this product. And it sounds great. And it's junk.
