Once upon a time, "Mom, I want to learn to play the drums," was every Moms worse nightmare.

Sure, even MOM knows that drums are WAY cooler than clarinet and accordion, but so too are they infinitely louder...

Then... maybe you grew older and as an adult YOU wanted to play the drums...

and had to deal with the nutty neighbor who'd call the police every time you'd go to practice... and didn't know what to do when you were JONESING to practice at 2 in the AM...

Enter the era of the practice kit (bo-----orrrrrrrrrrrrring!) and the older electronic kits (cheeeeeeeee-zzzzzzzzeeeeeee!)

Times have changed though... Frankly speaking I'm a keyboardist, not a drummer, but I ran a club for a while and we had a PERL RHYTHM TRAVELLER set... an acoustic compact...

When there were no customers I began to rehearse and got so-so enough that I could sit in without being laughed at...

(I got good enough that I could do some paradiddles, a half way descent press roll, and back musicians on basic swing, shuffle, and even some funkier stuff.)

Recently I began composing using Logic, and I found myself bored tapping out beats on my M-AUDIO, so I wondered about getting a CHEAP MIDI drum controller... but then I sat down and tried out this baby, and it fell right into my lap.

First, its pretty amazing because it feels and sounds pretty close to a real kit, give or take minor dynamic issues (say the rim shot... you can hit the side of the snare and get a high timbale like pitch, but you can't really get that bossa nova type rim shot sound by cross sticking... or maybe you can and I just haven't figured it out.) - - All in all, the general consensus is, no, it won't replace a real acoustic kit, however, it does feel and sound purrrrrrrty darn good.

All in all, this is a great ditty.... I'm not sure whether or not a "top level pro" would vouch for it... but I can say that if I still had my club and was having the police problem, I might have considered putting the snare and kick in the club, but using real cymbals (this way I could control the noise level.) - - In addition, I know its going to help me get better because I can practice at 3:00 in the AM, even record, and no one is going to give a hoot, except one of my dogs who finds the contraption a bit freaky (luckily he doesn't bark at it...)
